Individual Exercise Prescription

If you would like an Individual Exercise Prescription, please request one from your therapist during your Initial Assessment.

A personalised Exercise Prescription that addresses your specific needs is either emailed, printed or available for you online, and your therapist will go through each exercise with you to ensure its correct execution.
We make use of the WebExercises software that allows access to more than 2000 exercises and includes photos and video clips thus improving accuracy of exercise execution and compliance. WebExercises is also linked with PostureScreen Mobile™ for convenience.

Your exercise programme will be progressed and monitored by your therapist during subsequent sessions, in order to assist you to adapt it successfully into your lifestyle.  Your individual programme can be adapted to complement any exercise regime you are currently doing.

This bespoke programme can be compiled with either Home Exercise in mind or for use within our Exercise Studio.

Posture Screening

Augmented reality Posture Screening software allows us to analyse your standing and seated posture remotely via photographs and generate a detailed report with bespoke correctional exercises.

Simply get someone to take two photographs of yourself on the FREE RemoteScreen app.
We are then able to screen your posture for any deviations that may be causing you pain or discomfort and send you a detailed report.

This will give you an optional starting point in order for us to support you with any correctional changes via Soft Tissue Therapy and/or a bespoke exercise regime. It is possible for us to do subsequent Comparison reports to show your progress after intervention.

Your Posture Screening will be done on the date chosen during your booking and you can expect your report 2 working days thereafter.

*Please note that this is NOT a Physical appointment you need to attend yourself. The booking is purely for our own diaries.

Tips for taking your Photographs:

  • Take two photographs (using the app), one front-facing and the other turned to your left (we need to see your front and right hand side)
  • Take them in a well lit room with light from the front (no back lighting)
  • Please wear tight fitting, lightly coloured clothing (NO BLACK)

This assists us in accurately identifying the anatomical landmarks on your body and thus providing you with an accurately detailed report.

Balance and proprioception

Have you ever tripped over yourself, missed a step, or felt seasick? While the occasional awkward stumble or seaside misfortune may seem like an inconvenience, it’s our body’s natural way of letting us know we are out of equilibrium. Without this feedback, we wouldn’t be able to sit, walk, or perform most of our daily activities. Balance is our body’s ability to stabilize a disturbance in our natural equilibrium. Let’s take a look at how this complex system works, and what we can do to improve it.

How does balance work?

While our muscles and joints can help maintain our sense of balance, the majority of the work is taking place in our ears. Within our ear canals lies the vestibular system, a complex set of semicircular canals that contain tiny hairs and fluid. Each canal is uniquely situated to provide our bodies with micro-tuned feedback. As our bodies move, the hairs in these canals move like seaweed in the ocean, sending a signal to our brains that we are moving out of equilibrium, forcing our muscles to adjust accordingly.

In addition to this intricate ear canal structure, our proprioception plays a critical role in our balancing system. Proprioception is developed throughout the nervous system. Our muscles and joints contain a tiny set of muscle spindles and Golgi tendons that sense the degree of tension and contraction. This information is transferred to our brains, and used to tell our limbs exactly where they need to be. You can think of it like spatial awareness, a naturally occurring process that let’s us move safely throughout the day.

Balance and proprioception helps us accomplish everyday activities; from walking to the kitchen or having a seat at the coffee table, balance plays a role in every aspect of our lives. When we engage in sports, workouts, and otherwise push our bodies to the limits, it can send this system into overdrive.

Balance in Sport and Active Movement

Our bodies are pushed to their limits when we exercise. We force our system of balanceto react faster than in our day-to-day lives. Team sports can pose a challenge as well, as we have to predict the movements of our teammates and opponents, and react as quickly as possible to these actions. The best athletes continually work on improving their balance through a series of exercises and activities.

Exercises for Balance

We’ve evolved to where the balancing process happens naturally, but there are a few activities you can practice to fine-tune the system.

Yoga – By practicing a variety of poses that test your balance, you can refine your muscles to stabilize more quickly. Beginners can try the tree pose, a one legged balancing act accompanied by steady breathing. Yoga connects the mind, body, and breath to help you develop a stronger sense of balance from within.

Strengthen your core – A strong core can help quickly stabilize your body when you’re feeling off. There are a variety of core-engaging exercises that you can try. To gain a clear understanding of what your Core is and how to engage it, you can sign up to our On-Line Course “Understanding Your Core”. Find what works best for you and strengthen your equilibrium from the inside.

Slack line – This uniquely challenging sport is one of the fastest (and most difficult!) ways to test your balance. A flat rope is placed between two poles (or trees), and a bit of slack is left in the line to increase the difficulty. The user tries to make it from one end of the rope to the other without falling off. That is of course if you can get on the rope without falling off first! We at Restoring Health therefore suggest the following as an alternative ….

Balance Board – Balance boards are used as a full-body workout, designed specifically to target your core and really challenge your balance skills. By placing the board on a roller or balance disc, the user is forced to maintain equilibrium to avoid letting the board touch the ground. Not only is this one of the most effective ways to improve your balance, but it is also incredibly fun and can be performed almost anywhere.

Whether you’re looking to improve your balance in everyday life, stabilise your joints following an injury or want to fine-tune your skills for competition, these exercises will not disappoint. Like any muscle system, balancing is a skill that can be improved with practice.

Suspension Training

Suspension training works by challenging your body in conditions of instability. This forces you to constantly engage your core to perform each exercise. It also helps improve your balance and overall strength. You are suspended from an anchor point where body weight becomes your machine and gravity your resistance.

Pelvic Clock

Chronic pain in the hips and lower back is often caused by a biomechanical imbalance. In our day-to-day lives, at least half of our core muscles remain unused, while the other half are stiff from overexertion due to poor posture, prolonged sitting, or repetitive asymmetrical movements with improper alignment of the hip joints, pelvis, and spine.

We’ll teach you how to restore muscle balance with the help of the Pelvic Clock® (during an ONLINE Functional Movement Therapy), a portable exercise device created by a former Olympic coach. All Pelvic Clock® Exercises are easy to learn, but it takes time, practice and precision to master them and receive the full benefits.

Most people favour one side of their body over the other. This means that around half of the muscles in the body are overused while the other half are inactive.

Body asymmetry worsens with age, leading to deterioration of posture, loss of a neutral spine position, and an abnormal tilt of the pelvis, which can be forward (anterior pelvic tilt), backward (posterior pelvic tilt), sideways (lateral pelvic tilt), or rotated (rotated or twisted pelvis).

 

The Pelvic Clock® helps you do the following:
